Tell Canada to ban atrazine, a harmful pesticide

The federal Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) is proposing to continue to allow the use of atrazine, a harmful pesticide widely used to kill weeds in corn and sorghum farms in Ontario and Quebec. Here are a few reasons why atrazine needs to be banned in Canada:

• This pesticide has been banned in the European Union since 2004.
• Atrazine contaminates drinking water sourced from surface waters in Quebec and Ontario like the St-Lawrence River and Lake Ontario.
• Atrazine can have a range of impacts on wildlife and humans:
      • The herbicide is known to disrupt the endocrine (hormone) system, negatively impacting growth, development and reproduction.
      • Scientists have shown that atrazine in aquatic ecosystems can feminize male frogs and impair frogs' ability to reproduce.
      • Children are more vulnerable to atrazine exposure, due to the role that the endocrine system plays in their development. A study led by a researcher from France suggests that maternal exposure to atrazine may have an effect on the weight and head circumference of newborn infants.

Help us ban atrazine by sending a letter to the Honourable Dr. Jane Philpott, Minister of Health, urging her to protect Canadians and the environment from atrazine.
